ABOUT YOUR PARTICIPATION
WHO IS CONDUCTING THE STUDY?
Dr. Wetherell, the Principal Investigator of the MEDEX study at UC San Diego, earned a B.A. at Yale and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with specialization in aging at the University of Southern California. She has been a member of the UC San Diego faculty since 2003.
WHY SHOULD I PARTICIPATE IN THIS STUDY?
You will have the opportunity to participate in one of the following groups at no cost to you: either Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), exercise, health education, or MBSR and exercise combined. You will be assigned by chance to one of these groups. In the future, we hope that other people might benefit from this study as the results may help improve cognitive function in older adults.
DO I GET PAID TO PARTICIPATE IN THE STUDY?
You will receive a total of $600 as compensation for your time and travel if you complete all study visits. If you do not complete all study visits you will be paid for the visits you complete. You will receive $50 for the screening visit, $100 for completing the baseline visits, $50 for completing the 3-month visit, $200 for completing the 6-month visits, and $200 for completing the 18-month visits.
WHY ARE YOU LOOKING AT OLDER ADULTS?
Decreased memory and concentration is common in older adults as a part of normal aging. In this study, we use the term “cognition” to refer to mental processes such as attention and memory. This study will help us better understand how mindfulness-based stress reduction, physical exercise, and health education classes influence cognition in older adults.
HOW LONG WILL MY PARTICIPATION LAST?
If you agree to take part in this study, your participation will last for about 18 months.
WHERE WILL I HAVE TO GO?
You will be asked to come to the UC San Diego campus in La Jolla for testing and assessments. The MBSR group as well as the Health Education group will be held at the UC San Diego Center for Mindfulness in University City. The exercise group will be held at either the Toby Wells YMCA in Kearny Mesa or the Mission Valley YMCA.
WHAT GROUP WILL I BE IN?
You will be assigned by chance (like flipping a coin) to receive one of the 4 treatment groups: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Exercise, MBSR plus Exercise, or Health Education (Living a Healthy Life). Your chance of being assigned to each group is 1 in 4. Neither you nor the researchers can choose the group to which you will be assigned.
ARE THERE ANY COSTS FOR PARTICIPATING IN THIS STUDY?
There will be no cost to you for participating in this study.
CAN I WITHDRAW FROM THE STUDY WITHOUT PENALTY OR LOSS OF BENEFITS?
Participation in this study is entirely voluntary. You may refuse to participate or withdraw at any time without penalty or loss of benefits to which you are entitled.
WHAT ARE THE FIRST STEPS IN GETTING STARTED?
If you are interested in the MEDEX study, please call our team at 858-534-8118 or send us a message on our website. We will ask you questions over the phone to determine if you qualify to participate. The next step is to schedule a screening visit at the UC San Diego campus in La Jolla that will last approximately 3-4 hours. The purpose of this visit is to further determine whether you are eligible to participate in the study. You will meet with other members of the research team, answer questions about your medications and health, complete questionnaires, perform balance tests, and complete a walking treadmill test and electrocardiogram (EKG). You may meet with one of the physician investigators to discuss your involvement with this study.
