If you are assigned by chance to this group, your participation will last a total of about 18 months. You will come in for MBSR sessions as described above for 2.5 hours weekly for 8 weeks and then monthly for the remainder of the study. You will also come in for exercise 2 times each week, up to approximately 1.5 hours for the first 6 months, and then weekly for the rest of the study. You will be given exercises from both groups to practice at home for the entire 18 months

About the MBSR Group
If you are assigned by chance to the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) group, your participation will last about 18 months. For the first 8 weeks of your participation, this group will meet weekly for about 2.5 hours. It will be led by trained clinicians. There is also a one-day (about 4 hours) retreat included. In the MBSR classes, you will learn about mindfulness or being present in the moment. This will include different practices to reduce stress, such as meditation and gentle yoga. You will be asked to practice some of these exercises at home. After completing the first 8 weeks of the study, you will come in for monthly visits. These groups will meet at the UC San Diego Center for Mindfulness in University City.
